The China Resources Group Headquarters building, popularly known as the “Spring Bamboo” for its distinctive tapered form, stands in the Houhai Central District of Nanshan, Shenzhen. Rising 392.5 metres with 66 floors above ground and 5 below, it was once the tallest building on the Shenzhen Bay skyline and remains the city’s third‑tallest landmark. Designed by the internationally renowned firm KPF, the tower features a series of stacked glass cubes that maximise natural daylight while creating a sleek, contemporary silhouette. At night, the sharply angled triangular glass panels sparkle like gemstones, making it one of Shenzhen Bay’s most recognisable icons.
For this prestigious project, we supplied high‑performance ultra‑clear double silk‑printed SGP laminated glass with the following configuration:
| Item | Specification |
|---|---|
| Glass Build‑up | 15mm + 2.28SGP + 15mm + 2.28SGP + 15mm + 2.28SGP + 15mm + 2.28SGP + 15mm |
| Type | Ultra‑clear double silk‑printed tempered laminated glass |
| Maximum Panel Size | 3000mm × 4700mm |
This construction uses five plies of 15mm ultra‑clear glass interleaved with four layers of 2.28mm SentryGlas® Plus (SGP) ionomer interlayer, fused under high temperature and pressure. SGP, developed by DuPont, offers more than five times the strength of conventional PVB interlayers. This gives the glass exceptional impact resistance, penetration resistance, and structural load‑bearing capacity – far exceeding standard laminated glass.
1. Ultra‑Clear Substrate for Maximum Transparency
Every pane uses low‑iron ultra‑clear glass with a visible light transmittance of over 91%, delivering a nearly colour‑free, crystal‑clear appearance that faithfully preserves the architect’s vision.
2. Four SGP Interlayers for Unmatched Structural Strength
With individual panels exceeding 14 m² in area and a total thickness of over 75 mm (five 15mm layers), the glass must withstand severe wind loads, seismic forces, and thermal stresses. SGP’s superior shear and tear resistance ensures structural integrity under extreme conditions.
3. Double Silk‑Printing for Aesthetics and Function
Precision double‑side silk‑printing not only achieves the building’s unique visual texture but also provides solar shading and glare control – a perfect marriage of design and engineering.
4. Fully Tempered for Dual Safety
Every glass layer is heat‑strengthened. Combined with the “anchoring” effect of the SGP interlayer, even if the glass is broken, fragments remain firmly bonded to the interlayer, preventing fall‑out and meeting the highest safety standards.
5. Mega‑Size Panels – Pushing Processing Limits
At 3000mm × 4700mm, these panels challenge the limits of tempering, laminating, and printing. Our advanced equipment and strict process control make this possible.
The “Spring Bamboo” has a conical geometry that flares outward from the 1st to the 23rd floor and then tapers inward to the spire. This unique shape demands extreme precision in dimensional tolerances and fabrication accuracy. In addition, producing such large, ultra‑thick laminated units presents inherent difficulties – from uniform tempering and bubble‑free SGP lamination to exact silk‑screen registration and interlayer adhesion.
As a strategic partner of Jangho Curtain Wall, we drew on our years of experience in mega‑size structural glass to overcome these challenges. Our state‑of‑the‑art tempering and laminating lines – among the largest in China – combined with a rigorous quality management system, ensured that every “Spring Bamboo” panel met the exacting requirements for dimensional accuracy, optical clarity, and structural safety.
The China Resources Headquarters is not only a Shenzhen city landmark but also a benchmark for ultra‑high‑rise glass curtain wall technology in China. As the core glass supplier for this iconic tower, we demonstrated our leading capabilities in extra‑large, extra‑thick structural glass through the outstanding performance of our ultra‑clear double silk‑printed SGP laminated glass.
From the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge to Shenzhen’s “Spring Bamboo”, we continue to drive innovation and quality, delivering safe, sustainable, and energy‑efficient structural glass solutions for landmark buildings across China and beyond.
