Project Overview
At Zhongbo Glass, we continuously redefine what is possible in architectural glass. The Chongqing Joy City — a vibrant, large-scale commercial and lifestyle destination — demanded a glass facade that makes an unforgettable visual statement. The architect envisioned vast, unbroken spans of transparent glass that would connect the bustling interior with the dynamic cityscape of Chongqing. To achieve this, we were entrusted to manufacture and deliver what stands as one of the longest single-piece SGP laminated insulating glass units ever produced for a building facade.
We fabricated custom super-jumbo insulating glass units (IGUs) that reach an astonishing 16,740mm in length. Each panel integrates high-performance SGP lamination on both the outer and inner panes, a Low‑E coating for solar control, and a thermally efficient 19mm air cavity. This project is a definitive milestone for Zhongbo Glass, showcasing our unrivaled capability to produce glass of extreme dimensions, flawless quality, and absolute reliability — all delivered to the challenging terrain of Chongqing.
Glass Configuration — Ultra-Long, Ultra-Strong, Ultra-Clear
The facade specification demanded a glazing make-up that provides maximum transparency, structural safety, and energy efficiency. We engineered a symmetrical, high-performance IGU:
Outer Panel: 12mm Ultra-Clear Tempered + 2.28mm SentryGlas® Plus (SGP) + 12mm Ultra-Clear Low‑E Tempered / 19mm Air Cavity / Inner Panel: 12mm Ultra-Clear Tempered + 2.28mm SGP + 12mm Ultra-Clear Tempered
Every component was selected for performance at this unprecedented length:
-
All Ultra-Clear Tempered Glass: Every 12mm ply is premium low-iron glass, fully tempered to over 69 MPa surface compression. Ultra-clear composition ensures absolutely neutral transparency without the greenish tint of ordinary float glass, flooding the Joy City interiors with natural light and true-color views.
-
Dual SGP Laminates: The outer panel consists of two 12mm plies bonded with 2.28mm SGP, incorporating a high-performance Low‑E coating on the #3 surface. The inner panel mirrors this with two 12mm plies and 2.28mm SGP. SentryGlas® Plus provides five times the tear strength of PVB and exceptional post-breakage integrity. In the unlikely event of glass fracture, the SGP holds every fragment securely in place, maintaining the facade’s structural continuity and safety.
-
19mm Air Cavity: The wide air gap, sealed with a durable dual-seal spacer system, provides excellent thermal insulation, helping to maintain a comfortable interior environment within the large open spaces of the retail complex while reducing energy consumption.
Maximum Glass Size: 2,476mm × 16,740mm — A 16.7-Meter Glass Monolith
The maximum panel size was 2,476mm in width by 16,740mm in length — over 16.7 meters long. This is a glass panel longer than many articulated buses, covering a continuous expanse of approximately 41.5 square meters. The sheer scale transforms the glass from a building material into a structural and optical marvel. Each IGU, weighing several tonnes, required flawless manufacturing, handling, and transport engineering. At Zhongbo Glass, we achieved this record dimension with our fully integrated super-jumbo glass production lines, proving that 16-meter insulating glass is not a concept — it is a product we deliver.
Overcoming the Challenges — How Zhongbo Glass Achieved the 16.7-Meter IGU
1. Tempering 12mm Glass Plies Beyond 16 Meters
Tempering a 16,740mm long, 12mm thick ultra-clear glass sheet is a monumental task. The furnace must maintain perfect temperature uniformity across a vast surface to avoid roller-wave distortion, bow, or spontaneous breakage. Our super-jumbo flat tempering furnace, one of the longest in the world, applied proprietary low-iron glass heating and quenching profiles to produce perfectly flat, fully tempered plies with uniform surface stress. Every ply was matched to identical flatness to ensure a flawless lamination stack.
2. SGP Lamination at 16.7 Meters
Laminating two 12mm plies with a stiff 2.28mm SGP interlayer at this extreme length demands an immaculate process. Any contamination or inadequate de-airing would ruin the panel. We utilized:
-
Class 1 cleanroom layup with precision alignment systems to position glass and interlayers without dust or misalignment.
-
Extended vacuum bag de-airing cycles specifically developed for ultra-long, narrow SGP laminates.
-
Custom autoclave cycle in our massive autoclave, capable of processing panels over 17 meters, applying uniform heat and pressure to achieve a bubble-free, edge-to-edge bond. The resulting laminate is crystal clear and structurally monolithic.
3. Assembling the 16.7-Meter Insulating Glass Unit
Coupling two massive SGP laminates into a perfectly sealed IGU with a 19mm cavity over a 16.7-meter length is a feat of precision engineering. We used synchronized multi-point vacuum lifters, laser-guided alignment, and robotic dual-seal application to maintain a uniform cavity width and create a hermetic perimeter seal. Every IGU was tested for dew point and seal integrity, ensuring long-term thermal and structural performance.
4. Logistics: Transporting 16.7-Meter Glass to Chongqing
Moving a 16.7-meter, multi-tonne glass panel from our factory in Henan to Chongqing’s urban center required bespoke logistics. We designed a custom, extendable transport trailer with multi-axis vibration dampening and a full-support articulating cradle. Police-escorted convoys, night-time delivery windows, and meticulous route planning ensured the panels navigated highways, bridges, and city streets without incident. Each panel arrived on-site perfectly intact, a triumph of transport engineering.
