Project Overview
At Zhongbo Glass, we believe that educational architecture should inspire — and the glass within it must provide both transparent safety and creative expression. The Hong Kong Stanley Secondary School is a forward-thinking campus that required a comprehensive glazing solution combining structural performance, decorative opacity, and extreme dimensional challenges. We were selected as the sole glass manufacturer to deliver a series of super-long, multi-ply PVB laminated glass panels that serve as transparent fins, decorative spandrels, and feature elements across the school’s modern facade.
Our scope encompassed three distinct glass configurations, all fabricated at an extraordinary 11,190mm in length with a remarkably narrow width of just 1,100mm. This 1:10 aspect ratio pushes the limits of flat glass handling and lamination. We supplied white-glazed decorative laminates for visual screening and thick multi-ply structural laminates — including a five-ply PVB fin — for load-bearing and safety-critical zones. The school now stands as a testament to our ability to manufacture the longest, most slender, and most complex PVB laminates for architectural applications.
Glass Configurations — Tailored Solutions for Safety, Structure, and Style
To address the diverse functional and aesthetic needs — from transparent safety barriers to opaque feature panels and structural glass fins — we fabricated three specialized configurations.
Configuration A: White Glazed Decorative Laminated Safety Glass
12mm Ultra-Clear Tempered + 2.28mm PVB + 12mm White Colored Glazed Tempered — Fully Laminated
This decorative panel provides both safety and a clean, opaque aesthetic. One 12mm ply is screen-printed with a durable white ceramic glaze and then tempered, permanently fusing the color to the glass. The 2.28mm PVB interlayer bonds it to a clear 12mm tempered ply, encapsulating the glaze inside the laminate for lifelong protection against scratches, weathering, and fading. These panels are ideal for spandrel areas, restroom privacy screens, and feature walls where light transmission is not desired but a bright, modern finish is.
Configuration B: Triple-Ply PVB Structural Glass Fins
19mm Ultra-Clear Tempered + 3.04mm PVB + 19mm Ultra-Clear Tempered + 3.04mm PVB + 19mm Ultra-Clear Tempered — Fully Laminated
For structural fins supporting the facade, we supplied a triple-ply laminate consisting of three 19mm thick ultra-clear tempered glass plies and two 3.04mm PVB interlayers. The total glass thickness of 57mm plus interlayers creates a rigid beam that resists bending and wind loads. The thicker 3.04mm PVB provides excellent acoustic dampening and enhanced post-breakage retention. Even if broken, the laminate holds together, ensuring continued structural performance.
Configuration C: Five-Ply PVB Heavy-Duty Structural Glass Fins
19mm Ultra-Clear Tempered + 3.04mm PVB + 19mm Ultra-Clear Tempered + 3.04mm PVB + 19mm Ultra-Clear Tempered + 3.04mm PVB + 19mm Ultra-Clear Tempered + 3.04mm PVB + 19mm Ultra-Clear Tempered — Fully Laminated
In the most demanding structural locations, we installed five-ply laminates. Five layers of 19mm ultra-clear tempered glass are bonded with four 3.04mm PVB interlayers, yielding a glass fin over 101mm thick. This massive structural element provides the load-bearing capacity of a steel beam while maintaining complete transparency, allowing natural light to flood the school’s atrium and corridors.
Maximum Glass Size: 11,190mm × 1,100mm — The Slender 11-Meter Challenge
All three configurations share a common, extreme dimension: 11,190mm in length by 1,100mm in width. This 11.19-meter-long, narrow format (aspect ratio over 10:1) is exceptionally challenging to manufacture, handle, and transport. A single five-ply panel weighs several tonnes, yet must be perfectly straight, bubble-free, and optically consistent. At Zhongbo Glass, we have the super-jumbo furnaces, laminating lines, and handling systems required to produce glass of this length and slenderness — and we delivered it across three distinct make-ups, all on schedule.
Overcoming the Challenges — Zhongbo Glass’s Precision Manufacturing
1. Tempering Ultra-Long, Narrow Glass Plies
Tempering a 12mm or 19mm glass sheet at 11,190mm length with a width of only 1,100mm demands a furnace that can maintain uniform temperature across the entire surface while managing the unique thermal stresses of a slender format. Our super-jumbo flat tempering furnace — one of the few in the world capable of lengths beyond 13 meters — used optimized heating and quenching profiles to achieve full surface compression above 69 MPa without introducing bow, twist, or edge kink. For the white-glazed 12mm plies, the ceramic ink was simultaneously fired and matured during tempering, resulting in a permanently bonded, scratch-resistant decorative surface.
2. Thick Multi-Ply PVB Lamination at 11.19 Meters
Laminating three or five plies of 19mm glass with 3.04mm PVB interlayers over an 11-meter length is a significant manufacturing feat. PVB requires precise humidity control and extended de-airing, especially in thick stacks. Our process:
-
Climate-controlled cleanroom layup to maintain optimal PVB moisture content and prevent haze or bubbles.
-
Nip-roll pre-pressing to remove the bulk of trapped air from the long, narrow stack.
-
Extended autoclave cycles in our large-format autoclave, applying uniform heat and pressure to ensure flawless, bubble-free bonding from edge to edge. The finished laminates are crystal clear and structurally monolithic.
3. Maintaining Straightness in Slender Panels
A 1,100mm wide, 11,190mm long panel is susceptible to bending under its own weight during handling. We engineered specialized vacuum lifting beams with multi-point support to prevent deflection. Our quality control includes laser straightness checks to ensure every panel meets the specified flatness tolerances before shipping.
4. Logistics: Transporting 11.19-Meter Glass to Hong Kong
Delivering fragile, multi-tonne, 11-meter glass panels from our factory to a school construction site in Hong Kong required meticulous logistics. We designed custom vertical transport stillages with continuous support, vibration dampening, and weather protection. The glass was shipped via air-ride trailers and coordinated through cross-border customs to arrive on-site in perfect condition. Despite the complexity of the slender format, we achieved zero transit damage.
Why Zhongbo Glass? — The Super-Long, Multi-Ply Laminate Authority
The Hong Kong Stanley Secondary School project demonstrates the unique capabilities that make Zhongbo Glass the partner of choice for extreme-length and multi-ply architectural glass:
-
Unmatched Length Capacity: Our jumbo production lines handle glass up to 13,500mm, making 11.19-meter panels a proven product category. We are one of the few manufacturers that can produce panels of this length in both standard and multi-ply configurations.
-
Multi-Ply PVB Lamination Expertise: While renowned for our SGP structural glass, we have equally advanced PVB lamination capability, handling interlayer thicknesses up to 3.04mm and ply counts up to five and beyond.
-
Decorative Glazed Glass Integration: Our in-house ceramic printing and tempering process produces permanently colored, encapsulated decorative glass that requires zero maintenance and resists fading.
-
Slender Format Handling Systems: Our custom lifting and transport equipment is purpose-built for extreme aspect ratio panels, ensuring safety and quality from production to installation.
-
Proven Educational and Institutional Portfolio: This school project enriches our extensive institutional portfolio, which includes the East Hall of Shanghai Museum, Chengdu Science and Technology Museum, Sui Tang Grand Canal Museum, and Tianfu Art Museum. We bring the same quality standards to educational facilities as we do to the world’s most prestigious museums.
