At Zhongbo Glass, we are no strangers to extreme structural glass challenges. The Huajiang Bridge in Guizhou is an engineering marvel — one of the world’s highest and most spectacular bridges, spanning a deep gorge amid breathtaking karst mountain scenery. When a transparent glass walkway was integrated into this record-breaking bridge, the demand for absolute safety, durability, and visual clarity was non-negotiable. We were selected to manufacture the custom glass floor panels that allow visitors to experience the canyon’s staggering depth beneath their feet.
Our task was to produce ultra-clear, silk-screened, triple-ply SGP laminated glass panels that serve as pedestrian load-bearing floors. Every panel had to combine structural strength, anti-slip functionality, and crystal-clear transparency — all while enduring high-altitude weather extremes and constant foot traffic. The Huajiang Bridge glass walkway is now a world-class tourist attraction, and beneath every visitor’s step is glass engineered by Zhongbo Glass to the strictest safety standards.
For the bridge deck and walkway panels, we engineered a custom laminated glass composite optimized for horizontal pedestrian loading:
12mm Ultra-Clear Tempered + 1.52mm SentryGlas® Plus (SGP) + 15mm Ultra-Clear Tempered + 1.52mm SGP + 12mm Ultra-Clear Tempered — Silk-Screened Laminated Glass
This configuration is a study in structural glass excellence:
Triple-Ply Asymmetric Design: Two outer 12mm plies and a central 15mm ply provide a total of 39mm of ultra-clear glass. The thicker core increases the panel’s bending stiffness, while the symmetrical outer plies balance stress. This optimized layering delivers maximum load-bearing capacity per kilogram of glass.
All Ultra-Clear (Low-Iron) Tempered Glass: Every ply is made from premium low-iron glass and fully tempered to surface compression exceeding 69 MPa. The ultra-clear composition guarantees a brilliant, neutral view of the canyon below — completely free from the greenish tint of standard glass.
Dual 1.52mm SGP Interlayers: SentryGlas® Plus ionoplast interlayer bonds all three plies into a monolithic structural composite. SGP’s high stiffness and tear strength (five times that of PVB) ensure that even in the highly unlikely event all glass plies fracture, the entire panel remains intact and load-bearing, preventing any fall-through risk.
Silk-Screened Anti-Slip Surface: A custom ceramic frit pattern is silk-screened onto the top glass surface and fused during tempering. This creates a permanent, durable anti-slip texture that provides pedestrian grip without compromising the transparent view. The pattern also reduces visual vertigo by offering subtle visual reference points.
Total Thickness Exceeds 42mm: With 39mm of glass and 3.04mm of SGP, each finished panel is a rigid structural slab ready for heavy public use.
The Huajiang Bridge glass walkway required panels in various sizes to fit the bridge’s complex deck geometry. Our manufacturing scope included panels reaching:
Maximum Size A: 3,850mm × 2,950mm — Nearly 11.4 square meters of uninterrupted glass floor.
Maximum Size B: 1,800mm × 2,200mm — Compact but equally robust structural units.
The largest panels, at over 3.8 meters in length, are among the biggest pedestrian-load-rated glass floor panels in public use. Each panel weighs several hundred kilograms and must bear the weight of multiple visitors simultaneously, with high safety margins against impact, bending, and environmental fatigue.
Producing silk-screened, triple-ply SGP laminates of this size for a horizontal structural application requires every process — silk-screen printing, tempering, and lamination — to be executed with precision reserved for life-safety-critical components. At Zhongbo Glass, we met this challenge with proven expertise.
Applying a silk-screened pattern to the top ply of 12mm ultra-clear glass, then tempering it to full strength at sizes up to 3,850mm, demands precision. Our process:
Automated silk-screen printing applies the ceramic ink pattern uniformly across the entire glass surface.
Simultaneous fusing and tempering in our jumbo flat tempering furnace, where the ceramic ink matures to a permanent, UV-stable finish while the glass achieves full surface compression above 69 MPa.
The resulting anti-slip surface is permanently bonded, resistant to abrasion, and optically consistent — ensuring both safety and a premium aesthetic.
Laminating three large plies of different thicknesses (12mm/15mm/12mm) with SGP interlayers requires exceptional control. The asymmetric thickness combination can cause stress imbalances if not handled correctly. Our approach:
Precision glass matching: Each ply was CNC-cut and edge-polished to exact dimensions, with edges inspected to eliminate micro-cracks.
Class 1 cleanroom layup to prevent any contamination that could act as a failure initiation point under pedestrian loads.
Multi-stage vacuum bag de-airing tailored for thick, stiff SGP stacks, removing all air from the bond lines.
Custom autoclave cycle in our large-format autoclave, applying uniform heat and pressure to fully bond the entire panel without glass displacement or interlayer thinning.
The finished laminate is bubble-free, crystal clear, and structurally monolithic — capable of withstanding heavy pedestrian traffic for decades.
For an outdoor glass floor exposed to rain, UV, and temperature fluctuations, edge quality is critical. Our panels feature precision-ground and polished edges, which are then protected by the bridge’s framing system. The combination of SGP’s moisture-resistant properties and our edge work ensures long-term durability in Guizhou’s variable mountain climate.
Transporting heavy, 42mm-thick glass panels to a mountainous bridge site in Guizhou is a logistical operation of its own. We engineered custom transport stillages with enhanced vibration dampening and protective interleaving. Each panel was delivered with full edge protection and arrived on site in perfect condition, ready for installation into the bridge’s steel support framework.
The Huajiang Bridge project reinforces Zhongbo Glass’s unique position as a manufacturer trusted with life-safety-critical glass structures:
Pedestrian Load-Rated Glass Expertise: We engineer glass floors, bridges, and walkways that are structurally calculated to support specified live loads with high safety factors. Our SGP laminates meet the strictest global standards for overhead and walkable glazing.
