At Zhongbo Glass, we pride ourselves on turning complex facade specifications into reality. When a prominent Shanghai commercial tower required an all-glass envelope that maximized transparency, guaranteed safety, and delivered uncompromising thermal performance, our team was selected as the single-source supplier. The result is a stunning vertical facade featuring some of the most stringent heat-strengthened laminated insulated glass panels ever produced in large format sizes.
This project, located in the heart of Shanghai’s financial district, demanded glass that could withstand high wind loads, minimize solar heat gain, and present an ultra-clear appearance without the waviness or distortion often associated with tempered glass. Our solution: a symmetrical, four-layer sandwich incorporating premium ultra-clear glass, advanced PVB interlayers, and an argon-filled insulating cavity — all processed on our fully automated jumbo glass production lines.
The facade specification called for a highly sophisticated makeup that balances structural integrity, safety, and energy efficiency:
8mm Ultra-Clear Heat-Strengthened + 1.52mm PVB + 8mm Ultra-Clear Low-E Heat-Strengthened + 12mm Argon + 8mm Ultra-Clear Heat-Strengthened + 1.52mm PVB + 8mm Ultra-Clear Heat-Strengthened
This configuration creates a triple-chamber effect in terms of strength, with dual laminated glass panels separated by a thermally insulating 12mm argon-filled cavity. Let us break down what makes this composition so special:
All-ultra-clear glass: We used low-iron “ultra-clear” glass throughout every ply, eliminating the greenish tint of standard float glass and achieving superior light transmission. This was essential for the building’s crystal-clear aesthetic.
Heat-strengthened (HS) instead of tempered: The architect specifically required HS glass to avoid the optical distortion and spontaneous breakage risk associated with fully tempered glass, while still providing twice the strength of annealed glass. Our ability to produce jumbo heat-strengthened glass with minimal roller wave was critical.
1.52mm PVB interlayer: The thick PVB film enhances post-breakage retention and dampens sound transmission. We applied this to both outer and inner laminated panels, effectively creating two safety barriers.
High-performance Low-E coating: A sputter-coated Low-E layer was applied to the #3 surface (the cavity-facing side of the outer laminate), reflecting long-wave infrared heat while allowing visible light to pass. Paired with the 12mm argon gas fill, the insulating unit achieves a low U-value, cutting cooling loads in Shanghai’s humid summers.
Symmetrical built-up thickness: The outer laminate (8+1.52+8) and inner laminate (8+1.52+8) share identical thickness, ensuring uniform stress distribution and a balanced thermal break.
The project’s maximum panel size reached 1465mm in width by 4479mm in height — an exceptionally slender and tall glass unit with an aspect ratio of over 1:3. Fabricating heat-strengthened laminated insulated glass at this size introduces a unique set of challenges that only a handful of processors can consistently overcome.
A single finished panel, weighing several hundred kilograms, had to meet the strictest criteria for:
Flatness and optical quality: HS glass naturally has tighter flatness tolerances than tempered glass, but achieving this across 4.5 meters in length requires precise furnace calibration. Our jumbo roller hearth furnace, capable of processing glass up to 8 meters, gave us the control needed to keep roller wave distortion well within the specified 0.15mm/300mm limit.
Lamination integrity for narrow, long panels: Laminating a 1.465-meter-wide by 4.479-meter-tall sheet with 1.52mm PVB without edge defects or trapped air is an art. Our automated PVB laminating line, equipped with vacuum bag and autoclave processes, delivered bubble-free clarity on every panel.
Insulating glass unit (IGU) durability: Assembling two massive laminates into a sealed unit with a 12mm cavity, while preserving the Low-E coating’s emissivity and argon concentration above 90%, required our state-of-the-art dual-seal IG production line and stringent quality checks.
Standard furnaces struggle to produce flat HS glass beyond 3 meters. Our expansive flat-bed furnace and proprietary heating profiles allow us to deliver heat-strengthened ultra-clear glass up to 8,000mm × 3,300mm with minimal optical distortion. For this Shanghai project, we maintained a surface compression between 24 and 52 MPa (ASTM C1048 standard) across every panel, guaranteeing safety without sacrificing flatness.
The 1.465m × 4.479m dimensions pose a huge challenge for nip-roll pre-pressing and autoclave cycle control. Our fully automated laminating line handles jumbo PVB and SGP laminates with uniform heat and pressure distribution. For this project, we developed customized autoclave cycles to eliminate the risk of edge shrinkage or delamination on such elongated panels.
Coating scratches and off-gassing are the enemies of high-performance IGUs. We process Low-E glass in a climate-controlled cleanroom environment and employ fully automated edge deletion, spacer application, and gas filling. Every completed IGU is tested for argon concentration and dew point, ensuring the 12mm argon cavity performs as designed for decades.
Delivering glass panels that are 4.5 meters long into the heart of one of the world’s busiest cities requires military-grade planning. Our custom A-frame transport racks, coupled with vibration-dampened suspension trailers, protected the glass from road stress. Each panel arrived on site without scratches, edge damage, or thermal stress cracks — a testament to our integrated supply chain and packaging know-how.
This Shanghai landmark project is a prime example of why leading architects, facade consultants, and glazing contractors trust Zhongbo Glass for complex architectural glass requirements.
Jumbo Flat & Curved Glass Capacity: Our factory is equipped to handle glass sheets up to 8,000mm in length, both flat and curved. We are one of very few companies in China that can produce jumbo heat-strengthened laminated insulated units with stringent optical requirements.
Dual Laminating Technology: Whether the project demands PVB (as here) or SentryGlas® Plus (SGP) for structural applications, we run both technologies on dedicated, fully automated lines. This flexibility ensures the right interlayer for every performance need.
Ultra-Clear Glass Expertise: Using low-iron glass requires extra care to prevent iron-nickel sulfide inclusions and color variation. Our quality control system inspects every sheet before processing, guaranteeing consistent ultra-clear aesthetics.
End-to-End Project Support: From glass strength calculation and thermal analysis to installation guidance, we work as your technical partner — not just a supplier. Our engineering team collaborated closely with the Shanghai project’s facade engineers to fine-tune the glazing make-up for optimal cost and performance.
Proven Track Record: This project joins an elite list of landmark buildings supplied by Zhongbo Glass, including the Tencent Cloud Tower in Shenzhen. It underscores our ability to deliver under the most demanding conditions — whether it’s a 7-meter curved panel or a 4.5-meter slender HS laminate.
