At Zhongbo Glass, we take immense pride in projects that celebrate the cultural heritage of our home province, Henan. The Peony Painting at Luoyang Peony Square is a spectacular public art installation that transforms architectural glass into a giant canvas honoring Luoyang’s identity as the “City of Peonies.” This breathtaking 9-meter-tall glass feature wall required a glazing solution that seamlessly integrates large-scale artistic silk-screen printing, structural durability, and high thermal insulation — all in a single, monumental insulating glass unit.
We were selected as the sole manufacturer to bring this vision to life. Our task was to fabricate jumbo silk-screened SGP laminated insulating glass panels that could display a vibrant peony pattern across towering dimensions, stand up to outdoor conditions, and provide energy-efficient performance for the adjacent public space. The result is a stunning fusion of art and engineering, stretching 9 meters high and showcasing our mastery of oversized decorative insulating glass — right in the heart of Henan.
The feature wall demanded a glass make-up that is simultaneously a structural envelope, a thermal barrier, and a high-definition printed artwork. We delivered a custom-engineered insulating glass unit:
12mm Ultra-Clear Silk-Screened Tempered + 1.78mm SentryGlas® Plus (SGP) + 12mm Ultra-Clear Tempered / 16mm Air Cavity / 12mm Ultra-Clear Tempered + 1.78mm SGP + 12mm Ultra-Clear Silk-Screened Tempered — Laminated Insulating Glass
This configuration represents a perfectly symmetrical, high-performance IGU:
Outer Laminated Panel: Two 12mm ultra-clear tempered plies bonded with 1.78mm SGP. The outer-facing surface (#1) features a permanent silk-screened peony pattern, fused into the glass during tempering. The inner 12mm ply is clear ultra-white, allowing the artwork to be viewed with depth and clarity while the SGP interlayer provides structural safety and edge stability.
16mm Air Cavity: The sealed air space provides excellent thermal insulation, reducing heat transfer and preventing condensation — essential for a large, publicly accessible glass wall exposed to seasonal temperature swings in Luoyang.
Inner Laminated Panel: The interior-facing laminate is the mirror image: two 12mm ultra-clear tempered plies with 1.78mm SGP, and the innermost surface (#4) may carry a complementary silk-screened pattern or a protective full-coverage ceramic backing, depending on the design intent. Even without a second frit layer, the dual-laminate construction ensures safety on both sides.
All Ultra-Clear Glass: Every ply is low-iron glass, ensuring the painted peonies appear in brilliant, true-to-life color with zero greenish tint — as vibrant as a real garden in full bloom.
The maximum glass panel size for this project was 2,100mm in width by 9,000mm in height — a towering 9-meter-tall single pane of insulating glass. To put this in perspective:
The height of a single panel equals a three-storey building.
Each panel covers nearly 19 square meters and weighs well over a tonne.
The aspect ratio of roughly 1:4.3 creates an elegant, column-like glass canvas.
Fabricating an insulating glass unit of this height with silk-screened SGP laminates is an achievement that requires complete mastery of every production step. At Zhongbo Glass, 9-meter IGUs are within our super-jumbo capability, and adding decorative silk-screen printing transforms a technical challenge into an artistic triumph.
Translating a detailed peony artwork onto multiple 9-meter glass panels with perfect registration and color consistency was the first challenge. We used automated jumbo silk-screen printing capable of handling glass up to 10,000mm in length. The ceramic ink was applied in precise layers to achieve the intended color depth, shading, and linework. Every panel was printed with identical calibration to ensure the peony mural reads as one seamless composition across all installed sections.
The printed glass then proceeded to our super-jumbo flat tempering furnace. Tempering a 9-meter sheet of 12mm ultra-clear glass requires tightly controlled heating and quenching to avoid roller-wave distortion, bow, or print degradation. Our proprietary low-iron tempering profiles simultaneously matured the ceramic frit to full durability and achieved surface compression above 69 MPa. The result: a permanently bonded, scratch-proof artwork on fully tempered safety glass.
Laminating two 9-meter plies with 1.78mm SGP interlayer, for both the outer and inner IGU components, demands a dust-free environment, extended de-airing, and massive autoclave capability. Our process included:
Class 1 cleanroom layup to prevent any particle defects in the bond line.
Vacuum bag de-airing specifically adapted for tall, narrow laminates.
Custom autoclave cycle in our large-format autoclave, ensuring bubble-free, edge-to-edge SGP adhesion across the entire 9-meter height.
Each laminated panel emerged crystal clear, with the silk-screened image perfectly visible and protected within the laminate or on its surface as designed.
Coupling two 9-meter laminated panels into a perfectly sealed insulating glass unit with a uniform 16mm cavity is a precision task. We employed synchronized vacuum lifters, laser alignment guides, and robotic dual-seal application to create a hermetic perimeter seal. Every IGU was tested for cavity integrity, dew point, and visual alignment to guarantee long-term thermal and aesthetic performance.
As a Henan-based manufacturer, we provided seamless logistics support for this Luoyang project. Our proximity to the site meant shorter, safer transport routes, reduced risk of transit damage, and the ability to deliver just-in-time. Custom vertical transport stillages protected the 9-meter panels on the journey, and our local installation support team ensured a flawless fit on-site.
The Peony Painting at Luoyang Peony Square showcases the unique strengths that make Zhongbo Glass the ideal partner for monumental decorative glass projects:
