At Zhongbo Glass, we are driven by a single belief: no architectural vision is too ambitious to be realized. When Huawei expanded its iconic Qingpu R&D Center with Building H6, the architectural design demanded a glass facade of unprecedented scale — a seamless, crystal-clear envelope that would set a new world benchmark for oversized architectural glazing. We were selected as the sole glass manufacturer to bring this vision to life, and we delivered panels that redefine what is possible in structural glass.
The centerpiece of this project is a super-jumbo SGP laminated insulated glass unit measuring an astonishing 13,531mm in length — over 13.5 meters. This is one of the longest single-piece tempered laminated insulated glass panels ever produced for a building facade. It stands as a testament to our engineering mastery, production capacity, and unwavering commitment to pushing boundaries. The Huawei R&D Center H6 is not just a building; it is a showcase of glass technology at its absolute extreme.
To match the high-tech identity of Huawei while ensuring maximum energy efficiency and safety, we fabricated a precision-engineered glass make-up:
10mm Ultra-White Tempered + 2.28mm SentryGlas® Plus (SGP) + 10mm Low-E Tempered + 12mm Argon + 10mm Ultra-White Tempered + 2.28mm SGP + 10mm Ultra-White Tempered
This configuration is the result of deep collaboration with the facade engineers. Every component serves a critical purpose:
All-Ultra-White (Low-Iron) Glass: We used premium ultra-clear glass for every ply, ensuring the highest light transmission and an absolutely neutral, non-greenish appearance. The facade appears virtually invisible, connecting researchers inside with the surrounding landscape.
Outer Laminated Panel: A 10mm ultra-white tempered glass laminated with a 2.28mm SGP interlayer to a 10mm Low-E tempered glass. The low-emissivity coating is positioned on the #3 surface (inside the cavity), reflecting heat while transmitting daylight. The 2.28mm SGP provides superior post-breakage strength and edge stability compared to conventional PVB.
12mm Argon-Filled Cavity: The 12mm gap, filled with high-purity argon gas, significantly reduces thermal transmittance (U-value). Combined with the Low-E coating, this ensures excellent insulation for Shanghai’s climate.
Inner Laminated Panel: A symmetric 10mm + 2.28SGP + 10mm ultra-white tempered laminate. This inner panel provides a second line of defense for safety and contributes to the unit’s impressive acoustic performance.
The maximum glass panel size for Building H6 reached an extraordinary 13,531mm in length by 2,628mm in width. To truly grasp the scale:
A single panel spans over 13.5 meters — longer than a standard city bus.
The glass area is approximately 35.6 square meters per panel.
Each finished IGU weighs several tonnes, requiring the most advanced handling equipment available.
Producing a thermally tempered, SGP-laminated insulated glass unit at this extreme length is an unparalleled manufacturing challenge. The aspect ratio, the sheer mass, and the need for impeccable optical quality demand complete synchronization of every machine and process in our factory. At Zhongbo Glass, we have invested years in building the capability to fabricate glass at this scale, and the H6 project is our crowning achievement.
Tempering a 13,531mm long, 10mm thick ultra-white glass sheet without unacceptable bow, roller wave, or edge distortion requires a furnace of monumental proportions and extraordinary temperature control. Our super-jumbo tempering line, one of the largest in the world, is purpose-built for lengths exceeding 13 meters. Using proprietary heating profiles and precisely calibrated air quench systems, we achieved full tempered surface stress across every millimeter while maintaining flatness that meets the strictest architectural standards.
Laminating two 13.5-meter long glass sheets with a stiff 2.28mm SGP interlayer is a process where there is zero margin for error. The SGP ionoplast requires precise heat, pressure, and de-airing. Our automated super-jumbo SGP laminating line features multi-stage nip-roll pre-pressing, controlled vacuum bag de-airing, and a massive autoclave capable of processing the entire length in a single cycle. The result is a bubble-free, edge-to-edge laminate with the full structural and safety benefits of SGP.
Assembling two massive laminated panels — each 13.5 meters long — into a perfectly sealed insulating glass unit with a 12mm argon cavity is a phenomenal task. We employed synchronized gantry lifting systems, laser alignment guides, and robotic dual-seal application to guarantee uniform cavity width and a hermetic perimeter seal. Every panel was tested for argon concentration and dew point, ensuring long-term thermal performance.
Transporting a 13.5-meter, multi-ton glass panel from our factory in Henan to the construction site in Shanghai is a logistical operation that rivals the manufacturing itself. We engineered custom 14-meter articulating steel transport frames, equipped with multi-axis vibration dampeners and real-time impact sensors. Dedicated air-ride trailers, police escort coordination, and night-time delivery windows ensured every panel arrived on-site in flawless condition, ready for immediate installation.
The Huawei Qingpu R&D Center H6 project solidifies Zhongbo Glass’s position at the very top of the architectural glass industry. Here is what makes us the partner of choice for the most extreme glass challenges:
Unrivaled Length Capability: We are one of a handful of manufacturers globally capable of producing tempered, SGP-laminated, and insulated glass panels exceeding 13,500mm in length. Our factory is purpose-built for super-jumbo formats that others simply cannot process.
SGP Lamination Excellence: SentryGlas® Plus is our specialty. From standard single-interlayer panels to complex multi-ply structural laminates, our dedicated SGP cleanroom and autoclave lines deliver perfect results at any scale.
Ultra-White Glass Mastery: We fully understand the handling, cutting, and processing sensitivities of low-iron glass. Our quality system ensures consistent ultra-white clarity, free from inclusions and edge discoloration.
