When the Conrad Shenzhen — a landmark of luxury hospitality in the heart of Shenzhen — required a comprehensive glazing solution for its elegant tower, the specifications demanded nothing short of perfection. The architect envisioned a facade and interior glass elements that seamlessly blend breathtaking views, structural robustness, and sophisticated thermal performance. At Zhongbo Glass, we were chosen as the single-source glass manufacturer to deliver this multifaceted vision.
This project required us to supply three distinct glass configurations, each engineered for a specific architectural function. Our scope included: an ultra-thick triple-ply SGP laminated glass for structural and safety-critical zones, a PVB laminated glass for interior applications, and a high-performance heat-strengthened insulated glass unit (IGU) for the main facade. With panel lengths reaching 10,000mm, this project showcases our ability to produce jumbo glass in multiple thicknesses and lamination technologies, all under one roof. The Conrad Shenzhen stands as a testament to our versatility, precision, and capacity to serve the most demanding luxury developments.
To meet diverse performance requirements across the hotel — from expansive windows to structural glass fins and interior partitions — we fabricated and delivered three specialized configurations.
15mm Ultra-Clear Tempered + 2.28mm SentryGlas® Plus (SGP) + 15mm Ultra-Clear Tempered + 2.28mm SGP + 15mm Ultra-Clear Tempered — Fully Laminated
This is a heavy-duty structural glass composite designed for fins, beams, or load-bearing elements:
All Ultra-Clear Glass: Three plies of 15mm low-iron glass provide a brilliantly neutral transparency, essential for luxury interiors.
Fully Tempered: Each 15mm ply is tempered to over 69 MPa surface compression for maximum strength.
Dual 2.28mm SGP Interlayers: SGP’s high stiffness and exceptional tear strength bond the three plies into a rigid, damage-tolerant monolithic panel. Total thickness exceeds 48mm, providing outstanding bending resistance and post-breakage safety.
12mm Ultra-Clear Tempered + 2.28mm PVB + 12mm Ultra-Clear Tempered — Laminated
For interior partitions, balustrades, or decorative features, we supplied a robust PVB laminate:
Ultra-Clear Clarity: Two 12mm low-iron plies maintain color neutrality.
2.28mm PVB Interlayer: A thick polyvinyl butyral interlayer offers excellent sound dampening, UV filtering, and safety retention. Fully tempered plies provide strength where required.
Simplified, Cost-Effective Performance: PVB is ideal for interior use where SGP’s extreme structural properties are not mandated, demonstrating our ability to match the interlayer to the application.
8mm Ultra-Clear Heat-Strengthened + 2.28mm SGP + 8mm Ultra-Clear Low-E Heat-Strengthened / 16mm Air Cavity / 19mm Ultra-Clear Tempered — Insulated Laminated Glass
This advanced IGU forms the primary thermal and visual envelope:
Outer Laminate (Heat-Strengthened): Two 8mm ultra-clear plies are heat-strengthened (semi-tempered) for superior optical flatness and reduced distortion, bonded with 2.28mm SGP. The Low-E coating on the #3 surface cuts solar heat gain.
16mm Air Cavity: Provides excellent thermal insulation, maintaining interior comfort in Shenzhen’s humid subtropical climate.
Inner Panel: A single 19mm ultra-clear tempered glass acts as a robust inner barrier. This asymmetric design optimizes weight while delivering structural capacity.
All Low-Iron Glass: Consistent ultra-clear aesthetics across the entire facade, ensuring true-color views of Shenzhen’s skyline.
The maximum glass panel size for this project reached 10,000mm in length by 1,755mm in width. A 10-meter-long glass panel is a landmark achievement, regardless of configuration. For the triple-ply SGP laminate (Configuration A), this creates a structural glass element of extraordinary scale — a 10-meter beam or fin that is completely transparent. For the facade IGU (Configuration C), a 10-meter insulating unit offers seamless floor-to-ceiling views without intermediate mullions, a defining feature of the Conrad’s opulent design.
Producing flawless 10-meter panels in three distinct make-ups requires complete mastery of every process — from cutting and tempering to multi-ply lamination and IGU assembly. At Zhongbo Glass, 10-meter glass is a proven capability, and delivering it in multiple configurations for a single project underscores the breadth of our technical command.
For Configuration A, we tempered 15mm ultra-clear plies at 10,000mm — a challenge of thermal uniformity and flatness. For Configuration C, we heat-strengthened 8mm plies to a tight surface compression range (24-52 MPa) to eliminate roller-wave distortion while providing twice the strength of annealed glass. Our super-jumbo flat tempering furnace, with length capacity beyond 12,000mm, executed both tempering and heat-strengthening programs with precision, ensuring every ply met optical and strength specifications.
Laminating three 15mm plies with two SGP interlayers at 10,000mm length is an extreme test of cleanroom, de-airing, and autoclave capability. Our process:
Class 1 cleanroom layup to eliminate particle contamination.
Extended vacuum bag de-airing to remove all air from the thick, stiff stack.
Massive autoclave with a custom cycle that uniformly bonds the entire 10-meter laminate without glass movement, bubble formation, or edge squeeze-out.
The resulting laminate is crystal-clear, structurally monolithic, and fully adhered edge-to-edge.
Configuration C required coupling an 8mm+8mm SGP-laminated heat-strengthened outer panel to a 19mm monolithic tempered inner panel across a 16mm cavity. This mixed-thickness pairing creates asymmetry that challenges insulating unit flatness. We employed laser alignment, synchronized lifting systems, and automated dual-seal robotic application to produce a perfectly sealed, argon-capable IGU (even with air fill, the hermetic seal must be flawless). Every unit passed dew-point and gas retention testing.
Coordinating production of three distinct glass types for one project demands sophisticated planning. We synchronized our tempering, PVB laminating, SGP laminating, and IGU lines to meet the construction schedule. Our in-house control over every process ensured consistent ultra-clear glass quality, identical edge finishes, and harmonized optical properties across all configurations — so the Conrad’s glass elements read as one family, even where different make-ups meet.
Transporting delicate 10-meter IGU panels alongside heavy triple-laminate glass fins required customized stillages for each configuration. Our air-ride trailers with vibration monitoring delivered every piece — whether a 48mm-thick structural fin or a 35mm-thick IGU — from our factory to the Conrad’s Shenzhen site intact and on schedule.
The Conrad Shenzhen project highlights the comprehensive capabilities that make Zhongbo Glass the ideal partner for complex luxury developments:
