We delivered an engineering masterpiece — jumbo multi-ply SGP laminated semi-tempered glass panels — that sets a new benchmark for complex architectural glazing.
The project required massive glass panels that function as both a transparent skin and a load-bearing structural element, all while maintaining perfect optical quality. Our response was a four-layer, triple-SGP-interlayer glass make-up, produced in sizes up to 7.27 meters. This is not a standard laminated glass unit — it is a high-performance structural composite. Here is why this make-up was specified and how we mastered it:
All Low-Iron (Ultra-Clear) Glass: Every ply is premium low-iron glass, providing exceptional light transmission and a crystal-clear, non-greenish appearance that defines the luxury retail atmosphere of SKP.
Semi-Tempered (Heat-Strengthened) Across All Plies: The architect specified semi-tempered glass instead of fully tempered glass to eliminate the risk of spontaneous breakage from nickel sulfide inclusions, and to achieve superior optical flatness. Our jumbo heat-strengthening process imparts twice the strength of annealed glass while maintaining a surface compression between 24 and 52 MPa — perfect for laminated structural applications.
Triple 1.52mm SGP Interlayers: Using three layers of SentryGlas® Plus ionoplast interlayer creates an exceptionally stiff, damage-tolerant glass composite. Even under extreme impact or overload, the SGP holds all four glass plies together, maintaining residual strength and preventing any fragments from falling. This was absolutely critical for a public space with maximum occupant safety demands.
Total Make-Up Thickness: At over 50mm thick (48mm of glass plus 4.56mm of SGP), each panel is a monolithic-like structural slab offering outstanding rigidity, acoustic damping, and long-term durability.
The maximum panel size reached 7,271mm in length by 2,173mm in width — a colossal sheet of multi-laminate glass weighing well over 2.5 tonnes. Producing such a panel is a challenge at every stage of the manufacturing chain. At Zhongbo Glass, we thrive on these extremes.
Jumbo Semi-Tempering: Heating and controlled cooling of a 7.3-meter low-iron glass sheet to exact semi-tempered standards requires one of the largest and most precisely tuned furnaces in the industry. Our super-jumbo flat tempering furnace, capable of handling glass up to 12 meters long, delivered uniformly heat-strengthened plies with minimal roller wave and bow, ensuring that all four plies match perfectly during lamination.
Multi-Ply Lamination Precision: Aligning four oversized sheets of glass with three SGP interlayers, de-airing them without trapping defects, and autoclaving the entire stack is an extreme technical challenge. We utilized a carefully staged process — precise interlayer cutting and layup in a Class 1 cleanroom, automated vacuum bag de-airing, and a customized autoclave cycle with extended heat and pressure profiles. The result is a completely bubble-free, optically clear laminate with full edge-to-edge SGP adhesion.
Weight and Handling: Maneuvering a 2.5-ton assembly through cutting, edge profiling, heat treatment, laminating, and final inspection required custom-designed vacuum lifters, tilting tables, and transport frames — all engineered in-house to ensure zero damage and absolute worker safety.
Semi-tempered glass is notoriously sensitive to furnace settings; slight temperature variations can cause bow, wave, or inconsistent surface stress. Our team deployed proprietary heating recipes for low-iron glass, achieving tightly controlled compression profiles that match perfectly from ply to ply. This homogeneity is vital for a thick multi-ply laminate — it eliminates lamination stress and potential delamination over time.
SGP interlayers are stiffer and more demanding to process than PVB. Laminating three SGP layers in a single panel multiplies the difficulty. We relied on our dedicated SGP laminating line, which features multi-stage de-airing rolls, precise vacuum control, and a high-pressure autoclave capable of processing glass over 8 meters in length. The outcome is a laminate where every interlayer performs as designed — providing extreme post-breakage strength, UV stability, and resistance to yellowing.
In a premium shopping complex like SKP, any glass distortion would be unacceptable. Our semi-tempered glass exhibits minimal roller wave and no iridescence, while the low-iron composition eliminates the typical green tint. Combined with the clarity of SGP, the finished panels offer a virtually invisible transparency that enhances the luxurious interior and exterior design.
Transporting multiple 7.3-meter, 2.5-tonne glass monoliths from our factory to downtown Wuhan required bespoke logistics. We designed custom A-frames with vibration isolation, utilized air-ride trailers, and sequenced deliveries to coincide with site crane availability. Every panel arrived intact, dimensionally accurate, and protected by edge guards and protective films.
