This project demanded a glass solution that is simultaneously an architectural statement and a high-performance building component. Our team designed and fabricated a four-ply, triple-SGP curved tempered laminate with an integrated ceramic frit layer, achieving a seamless, frameless transparency that blurs the boundary between the store interior and the bustling streets of Nanjing. Curved Tempering: All four 8mm plies are individually hot-bent and tempered to the exact same curvature radius. This ensures perfect shape matching during lamination, eliminating optical distortion and stress concentrations.
Integrated Ceramic Frit Layer: The second glass ply features a durable ceramic frit pattern, fused into the glass surface during the tempering process. Monolithic Edge Finish: As a single laminated unit (not an insulating glass unit), the exposed edges can be ground and polished, revealing the clean, glassy layering that underscores the premium feel.
The maximum panel size reached 6272.8mm in length by 1712.88mm in height, with a thickness of over 38mm. This is a very slender, high-aspect-ratio curved panel — over 6.2 meters long but less than 1.8 meters wide. The ceramic ink must be applied via screen printing, dried, and then fired during the bending and tempering cycle. Our in-house jumbo curved tempering furnace, capable of processing glass up to 8 meters in length, uses precisely controlled heating profiles to fuse the frit perfectly without causing glass deformation, roller-wave distortion, or color shift. The resulting frit layer is crisp, permanently bonded, and dimensionally stable — ready to be encapsulated inside the laminate.
Laminating four curved 6.2-meter plies with three stiff SGP interlayers is an extreme process. Even a slight mismatch in curvature between plies can cause bubbles, delamination, or optical defects. We utilized a shaped interlayer cutting and layup process in a dust-free cleanroom, followed by a vacuum bag de-airing stage and a custom autoclave cycle. Our large-format curved glass autoclave ensures uniform heat and pressure distribution, producing a crystal-clear laminate where every ply and interlayer is perfectly fused edge-to-edge along the full curve.
