Case Study: Digitally Printed Triple-Ply SGP Laminated Glass for Zhengdong Huarun OPPO Store

Project Overview

When OPPO, a global leader in smart devices, sought to create a flagship retail experience at the Zhengdong Huarun OPPO Store in Zhengzhou, the architectural vision required a glass facade that seamlessly blends cutting-edge digital aesthetics with structural integrity. We at Zhongbo Glass were selected as the sole glass manufacturer to engineer and deliver this vision. Our response was a sophisticated triple-ply SGP laminated glass panel featuring a fully customized digital printed interlayer — all produced in jumbo sizes exceeding 5.5 meters.

This project represents the intersection of art and engineering. The glass panels not only serve as a transparent building skin but also as a dynamic canvas for OPPO’s brand expression, while guaranteeing maximum safety for a high-traffic retail environment. For Zhongbo Glass, the OPPO Store demonstrates our ability to integrate advanced digital ceramic printing into large-scale, structural SGP laminates — a capability that distinguishes us in the architectural glass industry.

Glass Configuration — Structural Safety Meets Digital Artistry

The glass specification demanded a monolithic laminated panel that combines strength, optical clarity, and high-definition graphic integration. We supplied a custom-engineered configuration:

10mm Low-Iron Tempered Glass + 2.28mm SentryGlas® Plus (SGP) Interlayer + 10mm Low-Iron Tempered Digital Printed Glass + 2.28mm SGP Interlayer + 10mm Low-Iron Tempered Glass — Fully Laminated

This configuration is designed to perform on every level:

  • All Low-Iron (Ultra-Clear) Glass: Every 10mm ply is made from premium low-iron glass, providing a brilliant, neutral backdrop that eliminates the greenish tint of ordinary glass. This ensures the digital printed graphics appear with maximum color accuracy and vibrancy.

  • Fully Tempered Plies: All three glass plies undergo full thermal tempering, achieving a surface compression above 69 MPa. This delivers four to five times the strength of annealed glass and fractures into small, relatively harmless fragments if broken — a critical safety layer.

  • Digital Printed Glass Core: The center ply is digitally printed with OPPO’s bespoke design using high-durability ceramic inks, then tempered to permanently fuse the graphics into the glass surface. This pattern is fully encapsulated within the laminate, protected from abrasion, UV degradation, and cleaning chemicals for the life of the building.

  • Dual 2.28mm SGP Interlayers: Two layers of SentryGlas® Plus ionoplast interlayer bond all three plies into one structural unit. SGP provides exceptional stiffness, five times the tear strength of PVB, and superior post-breakage performance. Even under extreme impact, the laminated panel retains its integrity and prevents glass fall-out — essential for a public-facing storefront.

  • Total Thickness Over 34mm: The finished panel is a robust structural slab offering excellent rigidity and acoustic dampening.

Maximum Glass Size: 5570mm × 2334mm — A Jumbo Canvas for Digital Design

The maximum panel size for this project was 5,570mm in length by 2,334mm in width, covering approximately 13 square meters per single piece. This scale transforms the glass from a mere building material into a monumental graphic display. The design continuity across such a large panel — with no joints or interruptions — creates a stunning visual impact that draws customers into the store.

Fabricating a digitally printed, multi-ply SGP laminate at nearly 5.6 meters requires the seamless integration of our digital printing, tempering, and laminating capabilities. At Zhongbo Glass, we thrive on this convergence of disciplines.

Overcoming the Challenges — How We Delivered a Masterpiece

1. High-Definition Digital Printing on Jumbo Glass

Applying a precise, high-resolution digital print onto a 10mm low-iron glass sheet measuring 5570mm × 2334mm is a demanding process. We utilized a state-of-the-art jumbo-format digital ceramic printer capable of handling sheets up to 6 meters. The digital ceramic inks are engineered for perfect adhesion and color stability during the subsequent tempering cycle. Unlike screen printing, digital printing allows for unlimited design complexity, gradient effects, and photographic-quality imagery — all of which we delivered with pinpoint accuracy.

2. Tempering Printed Glass Without Compromise

Tempering a digitally printed glass sheet presents a dual challenge: the glass must achieve full surface compression, while the ceramic inks must mature to their final durable state without discoloration or distortion. Our jumbo flat tempering furnace uses precisely calibrated heating profiles that simultaneously temper the glass and cure the ink. The result is a perfectly flat, tempered ply with a vivid, permanently fused graphic layer — ready for lamination.

3. Triple-Ply SGP Lamination with Perfect Registration

Laminating three massive plies with two SGP interlayers requires the digital print to remain in perfect registration with the outer clear plies. Even a slight shift would be visually unacceptable. Our lamination process includes:

  • Precision layup in a dust-free cleanroom, using alignment jigs to maintain exact positioning.

  • Vacuum bag de-airing to remove all air from between the glass and stiff SGP interlayers.

  • Custom autoclave cycles that apply uniform heat and pressure across the entire panel, ensuring a bubble-free, optically clear laminate with the digital print perfectly visible and distortion-free.

4. Optical Quality and Edge Finish

For a flagship retail store, any visual defect is unacceptable. We selected ultra-clear glass for all plies and SGP for its superior clarity over PVB, resulting in a panel with outstanding light transmission and minimal haze. The exposed edges are precision-ground and polished, revealing the layered glass construction and providing a refined, high-end finish.

5. Logistics and Installation Support

Transporting finished 5.6-meter laminated panels to downtown Zhengzhou required our custom A-frame transport racks and vibration-dampened trailers. As the project is located in our home province of Henan, we leveraged our local logistics expertise to ensure just-in-time delivery, full site support, and zero transit damage — a benefit of partnering with a manufacturer that has deep roots in the region.

Why Zhongbo Glass? — Where Digital Printing Meets Structural Glass Mastery

The Zhengdong Huarun OPPO Store highlights the unique capabilities that set Zhongbo Glass apart:

  • Jumbo Digital Ceramic Printing: Our dedicated digital printing line handles glass up to 6,000mm and beyond, with high-resolution ceramic inks that are permanently fused through tempering. We can reproduce complex patterns, gradients, brand logos, and photographic imagery with stunning fidelity.

  • SGP Lamination Specialists: We are leaders in SentryGlas® Plus lamination, with the ability to produce single, double, and triple-interlayer laminates in flat, curved, and now digitally printed configurations. Our cleanroom and autoclave infrastructure is purpose-built for the largest panels in the industry.

  • Ultra-Clear Glass Expertise: We source and process only premium low-iron glass, ensuring a color-neutral canvas for digital graphics and maximum light transmission.

  • Fully Integrated Process: Unlike many suppliers who outsource printing, we control the entire production chain in-house — from digital art file optimization to printing, tempering, laminating, and logistics. This ensures total quality control and schedule reliability.

  • Local Advantage, Global Standards: As the project is located in Zhengzhou, Henan Province, we provided superior site support, faster communication, and reduced transport risk while delivering glass that meets global architectural standards.

  • Proven Landmark Portfolio: The OPPO Store joins our distinguished list of projects, including the digitally fritted curved glass for Xiaomi Home Nanjing, the 10.7-meter curved panels for Foshan Vientiane City, the 13.5-meter Huawei R&D Center panels, and the 7.6-meter curved Tencent Cloud Tower.
